Rita Woodcock
Rita Woodcock, who died recently was a longtime resident at Whinfell court. Rita and her husband Howard moved here in 1982. She was, several times, a member of the Board of Directors of Whinfell Activities Centre Ltd. and Whinfell Court Ltd. Rita and Howard loaned money to the company to assist in the purchase of the freehold of Whinfell Court.
Rita was a popular and respected resident at Whinfell and was engaged in all of the social activities for 42 years. Rita and Howard hosted a number of events including parties at their apartment and the Activities Centre. She organised a trip to Castle Howard as well as a weekend trip to the Netherlands for many residents. They were keen to further the social events and funded the installation of the kitchen area in the Centre to assist the development of activities. There was never a time when Rita was not involved in the “Life of Whinfell”.
Many of the residents attended her funeral at Ecclesall church which was conducted by Philip Winn. She will be sadly missed by so many friends here.
Tony Clement
I have just heard that Tony Clement died this morning, October 14th. 2023. He had been in a local nursing home for several months and had been unwell for the past few weeks.
Tony and his wife June were amongst the first residents of Whinfell Court, arriving in 1982. June recently moved to a flat in Nether Edge.
Tony Clement, a former Assistant Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police had a distinguished career in the police service. He was a holder of the Queen’s Police Medal and played a major part in many high level operations. On his retirement from the police force he became a top security adviser to Rolls Royce Aero. Before he joined the police he served in the Army in Egypt, reaching the rank of sergeant.
Tony was the first chairman of Whinfell Activities Centre Ltd and later served for almost nine years as chairman in the 1990s and early 2000s. He was instrumental in forming the new company of Whinfell Court Ltd, becoming the first chairman of both companies. Tony was a very active chairman, taking direct responsibility for overseeing the running of the pool and activities centre and was involved in all of the social activities at Whinfell. He was also extremely popular amongst residents and very highly respected here.

Brian Hill
Whinfell residents lost one of their dearest friends just before Christmas when Brian Hill died at hospital in Bedford. Brian and his wife Mary lived at number 8, Whinfell from January 2000 until March 2015 when they moved to Lincolnshire to be nearer to their daughter. They later moved to Bedford to be close to two of their three children. Their other son has lived and worked in Hong Kong for many years and they visited there frequently.
Before they actually came to live at Whinfell, Brian was well known to many residents as the restaurant manager at John Lewis store in the centre of Sheffield. He had been a long-term employee at John Lewis and was a keen member of their sailing and skiing clubs. I was pleased to go on a sailing trip around the Scottish west coast islands with Brian some years ago.
From the start of their life here Brian and Mary were actively involved in community events, supporting and helping in almost every activity that took place. Such was their commitment to social activities that they also hosted meals at their home and were invited to many other houses and private parties at Whinfell. Brian was a Board member at Whinfell for 8 years from 2005 and his contribution has been valued by the other directors.
In his life away from Whinfell, Brian was a long-standing member of the Freemasons and held offices in that organisation. I believe he had been grateful for their support as a child when he was orphaned at an early age.

December and died peacefully in hospital two days later. Brian was a quiet man who was extremely helpful to others and played a significant role in the development at Whinfell and he will be fondly remembered by many residents.

Brian Hill passed away on Wednesday 12th December. Brian lived at house number 8 with his wife Mary for a number of years and was a prominent and much valued member of our community. He served as a Board member of WACL and WCL and participated and helped in almost every community event here. They moved away to Lincolnshire and more recently to Bedfordshire to be nearer to their children as their health deteriorated. Mary has asked me to pass on this sad news to all friends at Whinfell. Brian has suffered a lot in the last few years with crippling arthritis. He had a fall on Monday and was admitted to hospital with an infection following this. He died peacefully. Brian and Mary are remembered with great fondness by many Whinfell residents.

Brian was a retired quantity surveyor and brought his professional skills to use here when he joined the board of directors of Whinfell around 1989. He was particularly helpful in contributing to decisions regarding the upkeep and maintenance of the Activities Centre. Brian and Betty were popular residents and Betty was a very competent musician, playing the keyboard at various social events. She died a few years ago.
